Getting out this autumn could be good for you and your business
As the evenings draw in and the temperature drops, the temptation to hunker down and get through the workload is understandable.
We get it but before you resign yourself to spending the next few months behind your desk, hear us out.
When you’re running a business, there’s always something demanding your attention. Customers, cash flow, staff, deadlines, decisions. Whether you’re managing a growing team or doing absolutely everything yourself, the list rarely gets shorter.
So when another business event invitation lands in your inbox, it’s easy to think: Do I really have the time or energy for this?
But what if getting out and meeting people isn’t another thing on your to-do list? What if it’s actually one of the things that makes everything else feel a little easier?
Not everything needs to be about growth
There’s a lot of noise around entrepreneurship.
Grow faster. Work harder. Build your network. Maximise every opportunity. Never stop hustling.
Frankly, it’s exhausting!
Of course, ambition matters. But not every conversation needs to end with a lead. Not every event needs to generate a measurable return on investment.
Sometimes, the most valuable thing you can take away from meeting other business people is the realisation that someone else is dealing with exactly the same challenges as you.
You might meet someone who has already worked through something you’re struggling with and is happy to share what they learned.
For sole traders and freelancers, that connection can help counter the isolation of working alone. For small to medium business leaders, who are often the people everyone else turns to for answers, it can provide a much-needed opportunity to talk openly with people who understand.
That’s valuable too.
A change of scenery can change your perspective
When you’re immersed in the day-to-day running of a business, it’s surprisingly easy to lose sight of the bigger picture.
A conversation over coffee might challenge an assumption you’ve been making. A workshop might introduce a simpler way of tackling a problem. Someone from a completely different industry might offer a perspective you’d never have considered.
Sometimes, stepping away from your desk is actually enough to help you return with a clearer head.
There are plenty of ways to make that happen.
You could attend a business networking event, join a practical workshop, spend a day coworking alongside other entrepreneurs or take advantage of one of the many business events happening across the region.
And as Christmas approaches, don’t overlook the festive gatherings! They’re a chance to strengthen relationships, celebrate what you’ve achieved and enjoy some company without the usual business agenda.
The best opportunities don’t always come from formal introductions or carefully rehearsed pitches. Sometimes they begin with an unexpected conversation.
Connection shouldn’t become another source of pressure
We’re certainly not suggesting you fill every spare hour with networking events. That would rather defeat the point.
Running a business is demanding enough without turning your social and professional life into another productivity challenge.
Burnout is a real concern, particularly when the boundaries between work and personal life become blurred.
Rather than committing to everything, set yourself a manageable goal.
Aim to get out and connect with other business people once or twice a month.
That might mean attending a workshop one month, trying a coworking day the next or joining a relaxed networking event.
Choose opportunities that offer something you genuinely need, whether that’s learning, support, inspiration or simply a change of scene.
If you’re exhausted and need a proper break, take it. Connection should support your wellbeing, not compete with it.
This autumn, don’t disappear into your workload
As the year draws towards its close, it’s natural to become more inward-looking. There’s work to finish, budgets to consider and plans to make for the year ahead.
But don’t underestimate what might happen when you make a little space for other people.
Not more hustle. Not more pressure to be everywhere, meet everyone and achieve everything.
Just connection.
A chance to share the load, clear your head, discover a different perspective or find an opportunity you weren’t necessarily looking for.
